Biography

PC: Crystal Orser

Saxophonist Ian Mahoney is currently enrolled as a student at Oakland University (OU), where he is passionately pursuing a degree in Music Technology. Under the esteemed mentorship of OU's Professor of Saxophone, Dr. Jeffrey Heisler, Ian has flourished as a performer and scholar. 

Ian's talent has garnered recognition on prestigious platforms, including being selected as a featured recitalist for the U.S. Navy Band Saxophone Symposium and securing 2nd place in the U.S. Navy Band Young Artist Competition. His remarkable achievements extend to the 2017 MTNA Competition, where he clinched victories in both the State and Division rounds, ultimately earning honors at the National level in Baltimore, Maryland. Furthermore, Ian Mahoney was granted a full tuition scholarship to Michigan State University's College of Music in 2017, a testament to his remarkable accomplishments as a musician. In a more recent triumph, Ian secured victory in the 2024 Solo Woodwind Competition at Oakland University.

 

In addition to his invaluable tutelage under Dr. Jeffrey Heisler, Ian has benefited from the mentorship of renowned figures in the industry, including Joe Lulloff, Scott Gwinnell, Marcus Howell, Tim Blackmon, Andrew Bishop, Sean Dobbins, and Pam Klena. 

As an active jazz musician Ian has performed with distinguished musicians such as Regina Carter, Steve Wilson, Michael Philip Mossman, Harvey Mason, Mimi Jones, Shannon Powell, Sean Dobbins, Andrew Speight, and Wendell Harrison.
